Are the Dems devouring their own?

Identity Politics: Eating the Democrats Alive From the Inside

By :
Even true-blue liberals like podcaster and author Sam Harris have been warning the Democratic Party for years that their reliance on identity politics was sure to be a dead-end street. But while college campuses, newspaper editorials, and even Capitol Hill were slowly but surely turning into incubators for this diseased ideology, the party’s faithful went obliviously right along with it.

We’re sure there are many reasonable, sensible Democrat voters who get nervous when the 2020 candidates start pandering to illegal immigrants on the debate stage, but they are all-too-rare and all-too-silent. The Oppression Olympics have gone mainstream, baby, and a few columnists are beginning to notice.

Take Maureen Dowd, the New York Times writer whose interview with Nancy Pelosi last week nearly sparked an internal World War on Capitol Hill. After Pelosi dismissed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her Squad as politically impotent and unimportant, the Squad fought back bitterly. AOC even suggested in one interview that it was disturbing that the House Speaker would continually “single out women of color” for criticism.

Dowd did not take kindly to that!

“She slimed the speaker, who has spent her life fighting for the downtrodden and who was instrumental in getting the first African-American president elected and passing his agenda against all odds, as a sexist and a racist,” Dowd wrote. “A.O.C. should consider the possibility that people who disagree with her do not disagree with her color.”

Whoa, a liberal Democrat wrote that? Where was Dowd in the Obama years, when the media was turning every single criticism of the president into some veiled, racist threat? Apparently it only becomes a “possibility” that criticism is divorced from race when that criticism is coming from the left. Interesting. You’re so, so close to waking up, Maureen!

But still, the identity politics train persists. 2020 candidates are talking more about their plans to open the borders than their plans to improve on a booming economy. Liberal bloggers are talking more about the “rights” of transgender athletes than about what might be done to help out the middle class. The Democratic Party spends more time on issues like the census citizenship question than on actually getting things done for the American people. They’ve embraced identity politics for a long time, but now? It’s more like identity politics has embraced them.

And it’s starting to swallow the party whole.
